Job Description

Remote is seeking Solution Architects to join the team in ASD. The Solution Architects will work independently with the opportunity for reasonable autonomy and accountability for the achievement of outcomes of their work. They will exercise both initiative and judgement in the interpretation of policy and in the application of practices and procedures. They will provide detailed solutions design technical, professional and policy advice in relation to complex work and contribute to strategic planning, program and project management and policy development. They will have considerable level of stakeholder engagement and will liaise with stakeholders in relation to complex issues. They will be required to identify, anticipate and respond to stakeholders’ needs and expectations to achieve work unit and the Australian Signals Directorate outcomes.

Role Description

Job Duties and Responsibilities may include:

  • Develop and contribute to solution designs, systems views and architectures using logical models of components and interfaces to meet business requirements.
  • Lead the development and production of solutions designs and systems and component specifications to meet the user requirements and business needs.
  • Demonstrate detailed research and analysis skills in support of the solutions design activities and the development of options to achieve the required business outcomes.
  • Demonstrate and apply knowledge of the Australian Signals Directorate systems and their functionality to deliver detailed solutions designs and architectures.
  • Build and sustain effective working relationships with team members and management and actively participate or leads team work and group activities.
  • Work collaboratively with stakeholders, management and subject matter experts to deliver the business outcomes.
  • Design and recommend solutions to address issues impacting on the achievement of desired outcomes.
  • Interpret and assess compliance with whole of government legislative, policy and regulatory frameworks during the development of solutions to meet business needs.
  • Demonstrate and apply knowledge of project planning in relation to scope, time, quality, communications and risk management for solution design activities.
  • Resolve problems using knowledge and expertise, taking the initiative to identify alternative courses of action.

 Technical Skills Required:

  • At least 2 years’ experience in a Solution Architect or similar role.
  • Strong leadership experience and skill as a technical leader.
  • Excellent organisational, communication and negotiation skills.
  • Qualifications in relevant technical discipline/s.
  • Experience providing technical directions to projects delivering complex software solutions.
  • Experience in producing design documentation essential.
  • Experience in systems integration activities preferred.
  • Experience in system dataflows preferred.
  • Desirable: Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology or related fields.

Essential criteria

  • Software design, Level 4 (SFIA): Designs complex software applications, components and modules. Uses appropriate modelling techniques following agreed software design standards, guidelines, patterns and methodology. Creates and communicates multiple design views to balance stakeholders' concerns and to satisfy functional and non-functional requirements. Identifies, evaluates and recommends alternative design options and trade-offs. Models, simulates or prototypes the behaviour of proposed software to enable approval by stakeholders, and effective construction of the software. Verifies software design by constructing and applying appropriate methods. Reviews, verifies and improves own designs against specifications. Leads reviews of others designs.
  • Solution architecture, Level 4: Contributes to the development of solution architectures in specific business, infrastructure or functional areas. Identifies and evaluates alternative architectures and the trade-offs in cost, performance and scalability. Determines and documents architecturally significant decisions. Produces specifications of cloud-based or on-premises components, tiers and interfaces, for translation into detailed designs using selected services and products. Supports projects or change initiatives through the preparation of technical plans and application of design principles. Aligns solutions with enterprise and solution architecture standards (including security).
  • Systems design, Level 4: Designs system components using appropriate modelling techniques following agreed architectures, design standards, patterns and methodology. Identifies and evaluates alternative design options and trade-offs. Creates multiple design views to address the concerns of the different stakeholders and to handle functional and non-functional requirements. Models, simulates or prototypes the behaviour of proposed system components to enable approval by stakeholders. Produces detailed design specifications to form the basis for the construction of systems. Reviews, verifies and improves own designs against specifications.

Desirable criteria

  • Emerging technology monitoring, Level 4 (SFIA): Supports monitoring of the external environment and assessment of emerging technologies. Contributes to the creation of reports, technology roadmapping and the sharing of knowledge and insights.
