Job Description

Remote is seeking Network Engineers to join the team at ASD. Network Engineers will work independently with the opportunity for reasonable autonomy and accountability for the achievement of outcomes of their work. They will exercise both initiative and judgement in the interpretation of policy and in the application of practices and procedures. They will provide detailed ICT network engineering, technical, professional and policy advice in relation to complex work and contribute to strategic planning, program and project management and policy development. They will undertake a considerable level of stakeholder engagement and will liaise with stakeholders in relation to complex issues. They will be required to identify, anticipate and respond to stakeholders’ needs and expectations to achieve work unit and agency outcomes.

Role Description

Job Duties and Responsibilities may include:

  • Accountable to contribute to the investigation, diagnosis and resolution of network problems and provide advice on preventative strategies.
  • Responsible to ensure all requests for support are dealt with and manage any outstanding problems in accordance with Defence and organisation standards, policies and procedures.
  • Use experience to design and implement network changes and maintenance routines.
  • Apply knowledge to explain and capitalise on the capabilities of current Defence and industry data, voice and audio networking devices and procedures.
  • Build and sustain effective working relationships with team members and actively participate in team work and group activities.
  • Facilitate appropriate direction for the team by clearly communicating goals and objectives.
  • Interpret and comply with security policy and contribute to the development of standards and guidelines.
  • Investigate and resolve network problems using expertise, taking the initiative to identify alternative courses of action.

Technical Skills:

  • Intermediate understanding of network fundamentals, such as protocols, architectures, devices, topologies and standards.
  • Basic knowledge and experience of network security.
  • Experience with network security including enterprise proxy and load balancing systems and experience with different systems and architecture.
  • Experience deploying network systems that form part of virtualisation solution from vendors such as VMWare.
  • Moderate experience in general scripting and coding for automation of infrastructure.
  • Experience in IT systems design including detailed experience in building testable and maintainable systems using continuous integration and deployment technologies.

Essential criteria

  • IT infrastructure (ITOP) Level 4: Provides technical expertise to enable the correct application of operational procedures. Contributes to the planning and implementation of infrastructure maintenance and updates. Implements agreed infrastructure changes and maintenance routines. Uses infrastructure management tools to determine load and performance statistics. Configures tools and/or creates scripts to automate the provisioning, testing and deployment of new and changed infrastructure. Maintains operational procedures and checks that they are executed following agreed standards. Investigates and enables the resolution of operational issues. Provides reports and proposals for improvement, to specialists, users and managers.
  • Systems design (DESN) Level 4: Designs system components using appropriate modelling techniques following agreed architectures, design standards, patterns and methodology. Identifies and evaluates alternative design options and trade-offs. Creates multiple design views to address the concerns of the different stakeholders and to handle functional and non-functional requirements. Models, simulates or prototypes the behaviour of proposed system components to enable approval by stakeholders. Produces detailed design specifications to form the basis for the construction of systems. Reviews, verifies and improves own designs against specifications.
  • Systems installation and removal (HSIN) Level 4: Undertakes or supervises complex installations and de-installations of systems or components, including handover to the client. Develops procedures and standards for installation and handover to maintain and improve the installation service. Schedules installation work around client priorities and resource availability. Ensures adherence to established safety and quality procedures.

Desirable criteria

  • Network support (NTAS) Level 4: Carries out agreed network maintenance tasks and specified operational configuration of network components. Establish and diagnose network problems/faults using the required troubleshooting methodology and tools. Uses network management software and tools to collect agreed performance and traffic statistics.
