Job Description
Remote is seeking a Data Analyst to design, analyse and deliver objective statistics and data-related insights in ASD. The Data Analyst will undertake analysis to define, structure and solve complex data analysis and visualisation problems, including the generation of dashboards and other visualisations using a variety of data sources and understand and utilise analytical tools including Power Bl and other business intelligence tools to generate analysis and insights that contribute to achieving business outcomes.
Role Description
Key duties and responsibilities:
- Undertake analysis to define, structure and solve complex data analysis and visualisation problems, including the generation of dashboards and other visualisations using a variety of data sources.
- Understand and utilise analytical tools including Power Bl and other business intelligence tools to generate analysis and insights that contribute to achieving business outcomes.
- Provide advice on data analysis, reporting and collection methodologies, including supporting the use of software to collect and report on business-relevant metrics.
- Contribute to the management of the risks associated with the use of data including balancing security and privacy against the benefits of collecting and sharing data.
- Engage with stakeholders across the agency to understand their business needs and expectations in order to build, sustain and make informed changes to reporting. This includes responsibility for the compilation of briefs and demonstration of output to senior management.
- Build and sustain effective relationships and negotiate with customers and key stakeholders to deliver tailored reporting.
- Resolve problems using knowledge, professional judgement and initiative to identify and recommend alternative courses of action.
- Accountable for accurate and timely completion of work, sharing own expertise with others and guiding less experienced employees.
- Develop and maintain business domain knowledge, understanding of the Australian Signals Directorate corporate data, data analysis skills and awareness of emerging techniques and trends.
- Work collaboratively, operate as an effective team member and actively participate in organisational activities.
Technical Skills:
- Demonstrated advanced visualisation and report writing skills in PowerBI and other business intelligence tools.
- Effective data management and visualisation skills enabling the construction of a compelling story tailored to a variety of audiences, including line manager and senior executive.
- Experience with the Defence desktop environment and associated applications including the ROMAN financial management tool.
- Highly experienced in using MS Excel, PowerApps and Microsoft Forms, which are all necessary for the creation of visually and verbally engaging reports for stakeholders.
- Experience in report creation, modelling and trend forecasting including financial reporting.
- Strongly skilled in statistical and financial modelling, including project accounting and cost estimation.
- Knowledge of Project and Program Management methodologies, including MSP, Prince2 and Prince2Agile.
Desirable:
- Bachelor's degree in a financial or data analysis related discipline.
- Experience supporting complex projects through the provision of data analysis.
Essential criteria:
- Business intelligence: Level 3 (SFIA)
Sources and prepares data for analysis and performs standard business intelligence analysis activities. Creates and delivers standard reports in accordance with stakeholder needs and conforming to agreed standards. Investigates the need for new or revised business intelligence analysis. Contributes to the recommendation of improvements. Engages with stakeholders under direction.
- Business situation analysis: Level 5 (SFIA)
Plans, manages and investigates business situation analysis where there is significant ambiguity and complexity. Advises on the approach and techniques to be used for business situation analysis. Ensures holistic view adopted to identify and analyse wide-ranging problems and opportunities. Engages and collaborates with a wide range of stakeholders, including those at the management level. Gains agreement from stakeholders to conclusions and recommendations. Contributes to definition of organisational standards and guidelines for business situation analysis.
- Data modelling and design: Level 4 (SFIA)
Investigates enterprise data requirements where there is some complexity and ambiguity. Plans own data modelling and design activities, selecting appropriate techniques and the correct level of detail for meeting assigned objectives. Provides advice and guidance to others using the data structures and associated components.
- Data visualisation: Level 4 (SFIA)
Applies a variety of visualisation techniques and designs the content and appearance of data visuals. Operationalises and automates activities for efficient and timely production of data visuals. Selects appropriate visualisation approaches from a range of applicable options. Contributes to exploration and experimentation in data visualisation.
- Subject matter expertise: Level 3 (DCF)
Is an expert resource on the subject matter area associated with data use, including understanding and influencing the effective use of the data within that subject matter area and the relationship between that use and other data use contexts
